What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read grade-level stories, poems, and informational passages aloud in meaningful phrases. They use pauses, expression, and changes in pitch that match punctuation and meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student reads accurately at a steady, natural pace without sounding word by word or rushed. Pauses and vocal changes make characters, ideas, and sentence relationships clear, and the student can explain the passage afterward.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat fluency as speed, pause at every line break, or ignore commas and quotation marks. Some use exaggerated voices that distract from meaning, while others read every sentence with the same pitch.

How to Assess It

Give each student a 100-word grade-level passage and one minute to mark phrase breaks with slashes. Have the student read it aloud, then answer, “What did your voice help the listener understand?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Print a paragraph on sentence strips; students cut it into meaningful phrases, arrange the strips, then read it aloud with pauses at each break.

  2. Read one line in two different tones, then ask students to write which version fits the context and cite words that support it.

  3. Play Prosody Match: partners draw emotion and punctuation cards, read a sentence accordingly, and earn a point when listeners identify both cards.

  4. Students rehearse and record a school announcement, using phrase marks, planned pauses, and pitch changes so classmates can follow the message.
