What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read aloud in meaningful word groups rather than word by word. They vary pace, volume, pitch, and pauses to match punctuation, speakers, and meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student reads an unfamiliar third-grade passage accurately and smoothly after a brief preview. The reading sounds natural, and phrasing or emphasis helps a listener follow the meaning.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat fluent reading as fast reading, ignore punctuation, or pause in the middle of phrases. Some use dramatic voices that do not fit the text or continue when the wording no longer makes sense.

How to Assess It

Give each student an unfamiliar 100-word grade-level passage to read aloud. Ask them to explain one place where a pause or emphasis helped show meaning.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips cut into meaningful phrases; students rebuild each sentence, mark pauses, and read it aloud smoothly.

  2. Read one line two ways, then ask students which version made the meaning clearer and what the reader changed.

  3. Play Punctuation Conductor: one student points to punctuation cards while a partner reads, changing pauses and intonation to match.

  4. Use a short weather report and have students rehearse it as broadcasters, emphasizing key details and pausing between forecast sections.
