What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students group words into meaningful phrases and pause where punctuation or meaning calls for a break. They change expression, pitch, and tone to show characters’ feelings and the author’s meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student reads smoothly in meaningful word groups instead of one word at a time. Pauses match punctuation, and the voice changes to fit characters, events, and sentence types. The student corrects awkward phrasing when meaning breaks down.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think fluent reading means reading as fast as possible. They may ignore punctuation, pause after every word, or use a dramatic voice that does not match the meaning.

How to Assess It

Give each student a 60-word passage with dialogue. Ask the student to read it aloud, then note phrasing, punctuation pauses, expression, and voice changes.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Cut a short passage into sentence strips, have students add slash marks for phrase breaks, then rebuild and read it aloud.

  2. Ask students to compare a flat reading with an expressive reading and name how the voice changes the meaning.

  3. Partners draw emotion cards, then reread the same dialogue using phrasing and intonation that fit each character.

  4. Students record a class announcement, using pauses and voice changes so listeners can follow the message.
