What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students learn how print is organized so a reader can follow it. They track words in order and recognize letters, words, spaces, sentences, and basic punctuation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students hold a book correctly and track print from left to right and top to bottom. They identify letters, words, spaces, sentences, and common ending marks in a short text.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse a letter with a word or count punctuation as a word. They may begin reading on the right, skip lines, or ignore spaces between words.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a short printed sentence. Ask them to point to the first word, track each word, identify one space, and circle the ending mark.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a cut-up sentence to rebuild, then have them mark the first word, each space, and the ending punctuation.
Display a short sentence and ask, “How does the print show us where to start, stop, and separate words?”
Play Print Detective by calling out features such as a capital letter, space, word, or period for students to point to.
Examine a cereal box or classroom sign, then identify where reading begins, how words are separated, and what the print communicates.
