What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students hold books upright, find the front and back, open to the beginning, and turn pages in order. They follow print from left to right and top to bottom.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student holds an unfamiliar book upright, identifies the front, opens it correctly, and turns pages in order. The student points to where reading begins and tracks print from left to right and top to bottom.

Common Misconceptions

Students may hold a book upside down, begin at the back, or turn several pages at once. They may follow pictures instead of print or track words from right to left.

How to Assess It

Hand each student an unfamiliar picture book and say, “Show me how you would begin reading this book.” Watch for book position, starting page, page turning, and print direction.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give each pair a picture book and sticky notes to mark the front cover, back cover, first page, and reading path.

  2. Post the prompt “Explain how you know where reading begins” and have students point to evidence in a shared book.

  3. Play Book Fixer: hold a book upside down, open it backward, or track right to left, and students correct each mistake.

  4. Have students inspect a library book before checkout, then show a partner the front, first page, and direction the print moves.
