What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students handle a book correctly and show where it begins and ends. They locate the book’s name, the writer’s name, the artist’s name, and the cover picture.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given an unfamiliar book, a student correctly shows which side begins the book and which side ends it. The student points out the book’s name, creator names, and cover art and tells what each represents.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the front cover with the back cover or call every printed word the title. They may mix up the author and illustrator roles or think the cover picture was made by the author.
How to Assess It
- Hand each student an unfamiliar picture book. Ask, “Show me where the book begins, then point to its name and the names of the people who wrote and illustrated it.”
