Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students handle a book in the expected way and know where reading begins. They follow print across each line, move down the page, and turn pages in the correct direction.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students point to the first word, track print from left to right, and move down to the next line. They turn one page from right to left and continue in the correct place.
Common Misconceptions: Students may begin reading on the right side, move their finger backward, or skip to a new line incorrectly. Some turn several pages at once or turn pages in the wrong direction.
How to Assess It: Give each student a simple four-page book. Ask, “Show me where to start, track each line, and turn the pages until the end.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs big books and sticky-note arrows to mark the starting point, reading direction, next line, and page-turn direction.
Display one page and ask, “Where does my finger go first, where does it move, and what happens at the line’s end?”
Play Direction Detective by tracking a sentence correctly or incorrectly while students show thumbs-up or thumbs-down and explain the mistake.
Examine a classroom recipe book and practice tracking each line and turning pages in order to find the next step.
