What Students Need to Do

Students recognize connected letter forms and combine them into words. They read sentences and short passages written by different hands, using context when a letter is unclear.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students read a short handwritten passage accurately and at a steady pace. They use letter shapes, word spacing, and sentence context to work out unfamiliar words.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse letters with similar shapes, such as r and s or m and n. They may treat connected letters as one long shape or miss spaces between words. Some think every writer forms cursive letters exactly the same way.

How to Assess It

Give students a three-sentence cursive note, then ask them to rewrite it in print and answer one question about its meaning.

   Give pairs cursive word cards and matching print cards, then have them match each pair and explain which letter shapes helped.

   Display two versions of the same cursive sentence and ask, "Which letters look different, and how can you still identify the words?"

3. 03

   Play cursive word bingo by showing one handwritten word at a time while students cover its printed match on their boards.

4. 04

   Have students read a cursive recipe card, shopping list, or family note and identify the information needed to complete a simple task.
