What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read words, sentences, and short passages written in cursive. They recognize connected letter forms, including capitals, across different handwriting styles.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately read unfamiliar cursive words, sentences, and short passages. They recognize different handwriting styles and use context to confirm unclear letters.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse similar cursive letters, such as r and s, or capital I and J. They may expect every writer’s letters to look identical or guess whole words from one familiar shape.

How to Assess It

Give students a three-sentence cursive note. Ask them to copy it in print and answer one question about its meaning.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students match cursive word cards to printed word cards, then explain which letter shapes helped them.

  2. Display two cursive versions of one sentence and ask students to identify differences that did not change the words.

  3. Play cursive bingo using cards with printed words while calling and displaying each word in cursive.

  4. Give students a scanned postcard or recipe in cursive and have them record three key details in print.
