What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize connected letter forms, word boundaries, capitals, and punctuation in handwritten passages. They use context to confirm unclear letters and explain the meaning of the text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student accurately converts an unfamiliar cursive passage into print while preserving its words and punctuation. The student uses sentence meaning to check uncertain letter forms and answers questions about the passage.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat connecting strokes as extra letters or lose track of where one letter ends and the next begins. They often confuse similar forms, such as n and m, or assume every writer shapes letters the same way.
How to Assess It
- Give students a four-sentence cursive note and ask them to rewrite it in print. Then ask, "What is the writer asking the reader to do?"

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a handwritten recipe card in cursive, then have them highlight letter joins and copy the ingredient list in print.
Display two cursive versions of one sentence and ask students to explain which letter shapes helped them confirm each word.
Run a matching relay with cursive word cards and printed word cards, including easily confused letters such as r, s, n, and m.
Have students examine a scanned historical postcard, transcribe its message into print, and write one sentence explaining its purpose.
