What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students make inferences about implied, symbolic, and thematic meanings in a text. They track how those ideas develop and support or revise them with specific evidence.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify literal, implied, symbolic, and thematic meanings when the text supports them. They cite relevant details and revise an inference when new evidence changes their reading.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat an inference as a guess or rely on one isolated detail. They may confuse a topic with a theme, or miss implied and symbolic meanings. Some keep their first inference even when later details challenge it.

How to Assess It

Give students a six-line excerpt. Ask them to state one implied meaning, cite two supporting details, and explain how the details support it.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place three sticky-note colors on a passage for literal details, implied meanings, and theme, then connect each inference to marked evidence.

  2. Write: What does the speaker mean beyond the words, and which two details support that reading? Compare answers with a partner.

  3. Play Evidence Match by pairing inference cards with quotation cards, then challenge any match that lacks enough support.

  4. Analyze an advertisement or social media post for its direct claim, implied message, intended audience, and supporting visual clues.
