What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students draw conclusions about ideas the author does not state directly, including motives, tone, themes, and symbols. They track those conclusions across a text and support or revise them with evidence.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student states a reasonable inference, selects precise evidence, and explains the link between them. The student tracks how an inference changes and recognizes literal, thematic, and symbolic meanings.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat an inference as a guess or cite evidence without explaining how it supports the claim. They may confuse literal events with themes, assign fixed meanings to symbols, or refuse to revise an early inference.

How to Assess It

Use an exit ticket: Identify one implied meaning in today’s passage, quote one supporting detail, and explain the connection in two sentences.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups passage, evidence, and inference cards, then have them build ladders from explicit details to character, thematic, and symbolic meanings.

  2. Ask students to write: What does the author suggest without stating directly, and which two details led you to that conclusion?

  3. Run an inference detective game where teams earn points for matching claims with evidence and clearly explaining each connection.

  4. Analyze an advertisement or social media post, then infer its intended audience, unstated message, and assumptions from words and images.
