What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use details, word choices, and patterns to figure out ideas the author suggests without stating directly. They track how those ideas change and connect literal events to implied and larger meanings.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can record an initial inference, update it when new details appear, and explain why the change makes sense. The student can distinguish what happens from what the text suggests about a character, conflict, or larger idea.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat an inference as a guess based on personal opinion rather than text evidence. They may cling to their first idea, cite unrelated details, or confuse a larger message with a plot summary.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short passage with new information in the final paragraph. Ask: “What did you infer at first, how did your inference change, and which two details support your final thinking?”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups detail cards from a passage to sort into stated facts, implied meanings, and larger messages, then defend each placement.
Ask students to write: “What does the character’s choice reveal, and which words or actions led you to that conclusion?”
Play Inference Update by revealing a passage one sentence at a time while teams revise predictions and keep an evidence log.
Analyze a product advertisement to infer its target audience and hidden message, using images, slogans, and word choices as evidence.
