What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use clues from the text and what they already know to figure out ideas the author does not state directly. They follow those ideas across a text, adjust them when new clues appear, and support them with details.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students explain unstated ideas about characters, events, relationships, or a larger message. They cite relevant details and revise an inference when new information appears.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat a guess as an inference without pointing to evidence. They may also hold onto an early idea after later details contradict it, or confuse a character’s viewpoint with the author’s message.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph with an unstated character feeling. Ask, “What is the character feeling, which two details support your answer, and what later detail could change your thinking?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs clue cards from a short story, then have them arrange the clues and build an evidence-backed inference.

  2. Read a scene and ask, “What does the character believe, and what larger message might the author suggest?”

  3. Play Inference Detective, where teams earn points by matching inference cards to two supporting details from a passage.

  4. Examine a school notice or advertisement and identify what the writer expects readers to believe without saying it directly.
