What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students combine story details, pictures, and what they already know to figure out ideas the author does not state directly. They follow clues across the text and adjust their thinking as new details appear.

What Mastery Looks Like

After each part of a story, the student identifies a character’s likely feelings, motives, or lesson. The student points to supporting words or pictures and revises the idea when new clues appear.

Common Misconceptions

Students may retell events instead of explaining what the clues suggest. They may guess from personal experience without citing the text. Some keep their first idea even when later clues point elsewhere.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “Nia shoved her drawing into her desk when Ben walked by. Later, she placed it inside his birthday card.” Ask what students first thought and how the second sentence changed their idea. Have them underline two clues.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs story clue cards, then have them sort the clues by character feeling, motive, or lesson.

  2. Pause before a character acts and ask, “What is the character not saying aloud, and which clues led you there?”

  3. Play Inference Detective: teams read three clues, record a claim, then revise it when the teacher reveals a fourth clue.

  4. Read a weather forecast and recess notice, then ask students to infer why indoor recess was chosen and cite both texts.
