What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students combine text clues with what they already know to figure out ideas the author does not state directly. They track how an inference changes and support it with specific details.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students explain both what the text says directly and what it suggests. They cite relevant clues, revise an inference when new details appear, and explain their reasoning clearly.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat a guess as an inference without pointing to text evidence. They may notice only the literal meaning or rely on one clue while ignoring details that challenge their thinking.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph with an unstated character feeling. Ask: “What is the character feeling, which two clues support your inference, and did your thinking change?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs clue cards from a short story, then have them arrange the clues and build an inference about a character’s hidden motive.

  2. After reading, ask students to write: “What deeper message does the author suggest, and which details led you there?”

  3. Play Inference Detective by revealing a passage one sentence at a time while teams record and revise their best inference.

  4. Examine a weather alert or advertisement and identify what it states directly, what it implies, and which words create that implication.
