What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students infer ideas the author suggests but does not state directly. They follow those ideas across a text, support them with details, and revise them when new evidence appears.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify implied ideas about characters, conflicts, mood, and theme. They cite relevant details, explain the connection, and revise an inference when new evidence changes the meaning.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat guesses as inferences or cite evidence that does not support their claim. They may also hold onto an early inference after later details contradict it.

How to Assess It

Give students a short passage and ask: “What does the character realize but never say directly? Cite two details and explain your inference.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs quotation cards to arrange on an evidence ladder from literal detail to character inference to larger theme.

  2. Ask students to write: “What does the author want readers to understand without stating it directly, and which details reveal that meaning?”

  3. Play inference revision rounds by revealing a passage one paragraph at a time, with teams updating claims and evidence after each reveal.

  4. Analyze an advertisement or social media post to infer its target audience, unstated message, and purpose from specific words and images.
