What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students analyze how words, images, audio, layout, and genre choices shape a message for a particular audience. They create multimodal texts that use those choices to meet a clear purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain how specific words, images, sounds, and layout choices affect an audience. They can create a clear product that combines modes and adjusts genre, tone, and design for its purpose.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think adding any image makes a text effectively multimodal. They may use flashy fonts, music, or graphics that distract from the purpose. They may also use the same wording and design for every audience.

How to Assess It

Give students a plain three-sentence announcement and an audience card. Have them sketch a revision using two modes, then label how each choice serves the audience.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups a short article, photos, and a chart; have them build a one-page campaign poster for assigned teen or parent audiences.

  2. Ask students which design choice most changes a message's tone, then have them support their claim with one specific example.

  3. Play Audience Match: teams pair sample headlines, images, and layouts with audience cards, earning points for a clear justification.

  4. Have students redesign a school event announcement for students and families, changing format, wording, and visuals for each group.
