What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students study how words, pictures, headings, labels, sound, and layout affect a reader or viewer. They create messages that combine modes and genres for a named audience and purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain how a heading, picture, label, sound, or layout shapes a reader's response. They can choose and combine features that fit a clear audience and purpose.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think more color, pictures, or sound always makes a text better. They may choose features they like without considering the audience. They may also add images that repeat the words but provide no useful detail.

How to Assess It

Ask students to make a mini flyer that teaches kindergartners how to save water. Require a heading, two directions, a labeled picture, and one sentence explaining a design choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a plain weather notice, then have them add a heading, symbols, color, and captions for second-grade readers.

  2. Compare two school event flyers and ask, "Which one would persuade families to attend, and what design choices help?"

  3. Play a matching game with cards showing audiences, purposes, genres, and text features, then have students defend each match.

  4. Have students create a cafeteria sign that uses brief directions and pictures to help younger students sort lunch waste.
