What Students Need to Do
- Students study how words, pictures, headings, labels, sound, and layout affect a reader or viewer. They create messages that combine modes and genres for a named audience and purpose.

- Students can explain how a heading, picture, label, sound, or layout shapes a reader's response. They can choose and combine features that fit a clear audience and purpose.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think more color, pictures, or sound always makes a text better. They may choose features they like without considering the audience. They may also add images that repeat the words but provide no useful detail.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to make a mini flyer that teaches kindergartners how to save water. Require a heading, two directions, a labeled picture, and one sentence explaining a design choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a plain weather notice, then have them add a heading, symbols, color, and captions for second-grade readers.
Compare two school event flyers and ask, "Which one would persuade families to attend, and what design choices help?"
