What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine how words, images, audio, layout, and genre shape a message for a particular audience. They create texts that combine modes and use deliberate craft choices for a clear purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain how specific words, visuals, sounds, and layout choices affect an audience. The student can combine these elements into a clear, purposeful text and justify each choice.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add images or sound only for decoration, without linking them to the message. They may also ignore the target audience or assume every format works equally well for every purpose.

How to Assess It

Give students a plain school lunch announcement. Ask them to redesign it as a social media post for incoming ninth graders, then explain two design choices.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups printed headlines, photos, captions, and charts to arrange into an effective campaign poster for reducing cafeteria waste.

  2. Compare two versions of the same message and write which better reaches teenagers, citing three specific craft or design choices.

  3. Play Audience Switch, where students draw an audience card and revise a message using fitting tone, format, visuals, and text features.

  4. Create a public service post about a local concern for a real school audience, including a call to action and source credit.
