What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students make purposeful choices about texts, topics, tools, and strategies. They monitor their understanding and writing progress, then adjust when a choice is not working. They seek feedback or resources without waiting for teacher direction.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students begin tasks without repeated prompts, select useful tools, and change strategies when stuck. They can explain their choices, use feedback, and set a specific next goal.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think independence means never asking for help or using reference tools. They may choose only easy texts, use one strategy for every task, or treat a first draft as finished.

How to Assess It

Use an exit ticket: “Name one choice you made as a reader or writer today, explain why it helped, and identify your next step.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set out three texts and strategy cards, then have students choose a text, select a strategy, annotate, and explain both choices.

  2. Ask students to write: “When I get stuck while reading or writing, what can I try before asking the teacher?”

  3. Run a strategy switch challenge where students earn points for identifying a problem and choosing a different reading or revision strategy.

  4. Have students choose a real audience, such as a coach or principal, then plan and draft a message without a teacher-made template.
