What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make simple choices about what to read, draw, or write. They begin tasks, use familiar classroom tools, and keep working before seeking adult help.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student selects a book or writing idea and begins without repeated prompting. The student uses pictures, letter charts, word walls, or rereading before asking an adult for help.
Common Misconceptions
- Some children think independent work means they cannot use classroom tools or ask a focused question. Others wait for adult approval before choosing a book, writing an idea, or fixing a mistake.
How to Assess It
- Give each child a choice of two books, then ask them to read or picture-read and draw or write one response. Note whether they begin, use a tool, and finish with limited prompting.

Ways to Teach It
Set out picture books, paper, crayons, alphabet charts, and word cards, then have students choose tools to read and create a response.
Ask, “What can you try when reading or writing feels hard?” and record each child’s strategy on a class chart.
Play Tool Match by showing a reading or writing problem and having students point to the classroom tool that could help.
Have students make a picture shopping list for a classroom snack, using labels, copied words, or beginning sounds without teacher dictation.
