What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose suitable texts, writing topics, tools, and strategies for a clear purpose. They set goals, keep working through difficulty, and reflect on their progress.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students begin reading and writing tasks without waiting for each step. They make purposeful choices, use resources when stuck, and explain what helped them improve.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think working independently means never asking for help. They may also choose tasks only because they are easy, or switch strategies without checking whether they worked.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short text or writing task and ask them to set a goal, choose a strategy, and explain the result afterward.

Ways to Teach It
Set up a choice table with three books, sticky notes, and response options; students select materials, set a goal, and work independently.
Prompt: “Describe one reading or writing decision you made today, why you made it, and what you will try next.”
Play Strategy Match: students draw a challenge card, choose a reading or writing strategy, and explain how they would use it.
Have students choose a real school need, then independently write a clear email, announcement, or proposal for the right audience.
