What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students make purposeful choices about what, how, and when they read and write. They set goals, select strategies, monitor progress, and adjust without waiting for step-by-step directions. They explain why their choices helped.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a reading or writing task, a student starts with a workable plan and chooses useful tools. The student notices confusion or weak writing, changes the approach, and uses feedback selectively. A brief reflection names evidence of growth and a next step.

Common Misconceptions

Some students mistake independence for working alone and never asking for help. Others choose texts or topics only because they are easy, or use the same strategy for every task. Many claim they are finished after one draft or one reading.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Name one choice you made independently during today’s reading or writing, show where it affected your work, and name your next step.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up a strategy station with annotation tools, planning templates, and revision checklists, then have students choose one and justify the choice.

  2. Ask students to write: Which reading or writing decision improved your work today, and what evidence shows the improvement?

  3. Run a strategy match game where pairs connect task cards to useful approaches, then defend or revise each match.

  4. Have students choose a real audience, such as a school club, and independently plan, draft, revise, and send a useful message.
