What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make purposeful choices about what to read or write and how to complete the work. They set a goal, use strategies when stuck, and decide when to seek help. They reflect on what worked and choose a next step.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students begin work without repeated prompting and make choices that fit their purpose. They try a useful strategy, revise when needed, and ask for specific help after making an effort.
Common Misconceptions
- Some students think working independently means never asking for help. Others rush, avoid challenging texts, or abandon drafts instead of trying a strategy first.
How to Assess It
- Offer two short passages and two response prompts. Students choose one pair, work for eight minutes, then name the strategy they used and their next step.

Ways to Teach It
Set out three short texts, sticky notes, and notebooks; students choose one text, set a purpose, and record how they handled difficulty.
Write: When should a reader or writer keep trying, switch strategies, or ask for help? Defend each choice with an example.
Play Strategy Match: students draw a challenge card, such as unknown word or weak ending, then choose and explain a tool card.
Have students create a class announcement for a real audience, choosing the format, sources, drafting steps, and revision method.
