What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make purposeful choices about what and how they read or write. They set goals, use strategies when stuck, and decide when feedback or help is needed.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select suitable texts, topics, tools, and strategies without waiting for step-by-step directions. They monitor their progress, solve problems, and explain when they need support.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think independence means working without asking for help. They may also choose the shortest text, skip planning, or call a first draft finished.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short reading or writing choice, then ask: “What did you choose, what strategy did you use, and what will you do next?”

Ways to Teach It
Place four varied texts at stations, then have students choose one, set a reading goal, and record why the text fits.
Ask students to write: “When I get stuck while reading or writing, what can I try before asking for help?”
Play Strategy Match by having pairs match common reading and writing problems with useful actions, then defend each match.
Have students choose a real school need, then independently draft and revise an email, announcement, or set of instructions for that audience.
