What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose a book or writing idea and get started without step-by-step directions. They use picture clues, sound stretching, rereading, and classroom word tools. They ask for help after trying a useful strategy.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student selects a manageable text and reads for the agreed time. During writing, the student chooses a topic, uses available tools, and keeps going when a word is difficult. The student can name a strategy that helped.

Common Misconceptions

Some students think working alone means they cannot use picture clues, word walls, or other classroom tools. Others choose books that are too hard, guess at words, or wait for the teacher instead of trying a strategy.

How to Assess It

Give students eight minutes to choose a book, read, and write or draw one response. Note whether each student starts promptly, uses a classroom tool, and finishes without repeated teacher direction.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set out a book basket and writing tool tray, then have students choose materials and complete a ten-minute reading and writing task.

  2. Ask, "What can you try when reading or writing feels hard?" Have students draw one strategy and label it.

  3. Play Strategy Charades: students act out rereading, checking pictures, stretching sounds, or using the word wall while classmates name the tool.

  4. Have students make a classroom supply list, checking labels and the word wall before asking an adult to spell a word.
