What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make purposeful choices about what and how they read and write. They set goals, select strategies, monitor their progress, revise their work, and decide when they need help.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students set a clear purpose, choose useful strategies, and keep working when a task becomes difficult. They explain their choices, check their progress, and seek specific help when their own strategies are not enough.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think working independently means never asking for help. They may also choose only easy texts, skip planning, or treat a first draft as finished work.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “Name your goal for today, one choice you made without teacher direction, why you made it, and your next step.”

Ways to Teach It
Set out three short texts; students choose one, mark confusing spots, select a strategy card, and record whether the strategy worked.
Ask students to write: “What do I do when reading or writing gets hard, and what can I try before asking for help?”
Run a matching game where pairs connect problems, such as weak evidence or lost focus, to useful reading and writing strategies.
Have students draft a real email, review, or application response, revise it with a checklist, and submit a brief record of their choices.
