What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students break unfamiliar words into meaningful parts and use nearby text to infer meaning. They check their thinking with dictionaries or glossaries, then choose accurate words for different audiences and purposes.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students explain a likely meaning and point to context, roots, or affixes that support it. They confirm the meaning with a reference source and use the word accurately in speaking or writing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may rely on one context clue or assume a familiar-looking word has the same meaning in every passage. They may also ignore roots and affixes, or copy the first dictionary definition without checking whether it fits.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph with one unfamiliar word. Ask them to define it, identify two clues or word parts, and use it correctly in a new sentence.

Play Context Clue Relay, where teams infer highlighted words from short passages and underline evidence before checking a dictionary.
Students analyze unfamiliar terms from a medicine label, news article, or school policy and rewrite them for a seventh-grade audience.
