What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use context, word parts, word relationships, and reference tools to work out unfamiliar meanings. They then choose and use words that fit their purpose, audience, and tone.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students infer a reasonable meaning and explain which context clues, roots, or affixes support it. They confirm the meaning when needed and use the word accurately in speaking or writing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from one nearby word instead of checking the whole sentence or paragraph. They may misread roots and affixes, choose the first dictionary definition, or ignore connotation and tone.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: In “Although the proposal sounded beneficial, Maya remained circumspect and checked every claim,” define circumspect, cite two clues, and use it correctly.
