Georgia 5.T.T.3.c
The Standard
Apply opinion techniques to create opinion pieces that introduce the topic, state an opinion about the topic, supply reasons and evidence to support the opinion with linking words (e.g., because, therefore, since, for example) to connect the opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section. [This progression resumes as argumentative techniques in 6th grade; students will reinforce skills during 5th grade.] (C)

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students introduce a topic and clearly state what they think. They support their opinion with reasons and evidence, connect ideas with linking words, and finish with a conclusion.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student writes a focused opinion piece with a clear introduction and position. The student supports that position with logical reasons, relevant evidence, accurate linking words, and a conclusion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list reasons without evidence or examples. They may use linking words incorrectly, repeat the introduction as the conclusion, or drift between different opinions.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Should fifth graders have daily homework? State your opinion, give two reasons with evidence, use two linking words, and write a conclusion.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups sentence strips from a mixed-up opinion paragraph, then have them arrange the introduction, opinion, reasons, evidence, links, and conclusion.
Ask students to write: “Which school rule should change, and what reasons and examples would convince the principal?”
Play Linking Word Match by pairing reason-and-evidence cards with because, therefore, since, or for example, then reading each completed sentence aloud.
Have students write a letter recommending one playground improvement, using survey results or observations as evidence.
