The Standard

Apply opinion techniques to create opinion pieces that introduce the topic, state an opinion about the topic, supply reasons to support the opinion with linking words (e.g., because, therefore, since, for example) to connect the opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section. What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students write an opinion piece that names a topic and makes their position clear. They support that position with relevant reasons, connect ideas with linking words, and finish with a conclusion.

What Mastery Looks Like

The opening names the topic and clearly states a position. The student gives relevant reasons, connects ideas with varied linking words, and ends with a clear closing statement.

Common Misconceptions

Students may state a preference but give no reasons, or list reasons that do not match the opinion. They may repeat “because” for every connection or end without a closing statement.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “Should students have homework every night? State your opinion, give two reasons, use two linking words, and add a conclusion.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs mixed sentence strips from an opinion paragraph, then have them arrange the topic, opinion, reasons, links, and conclusion.

  2. Ask students to write: “Which classroom job is most useful?” and defend their choice with two specific reasons.

  3. Play Linking Word Match by pairing reason cards with because, since, therefore, or for example, then reading the completed sentences aloud.

  4. Have students write the principal a short opinion letter proposing one playground or cafeteria change and supporting it with reasons.
