ELA4th GradeOpinion Techniques

The Standard

Apply opinion techniques to create opinion pieces that introduce the topic, state an opinion about the topic, supply reasons and evidence to support the opinion with linking words (e.g., because, therefore, since, for example) to connect the opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section. What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students take a clear position on a topic and build a short piece that makes their thinking easy to follow. They support the position with reasons and examples, connect ideas with linking words, and finish with a purposeful ending.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student states a focused opinion, supports it with relevant reasons and examples, and connects ideas with varied linking words. The ending clearly returns to the position without simply repeating the opening.

Common Misconceptions

Students may state a preference but give no reasons, or list reasons that do not match their position. They may confuse evidence with opinion, overuse one linking word, or end without wrapping up the argument.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “Should recess be longer? State your opinion, give two supported reasons, use two linking words, and write a conclusion.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence cards labeled position, reason, evidence, link, and conclusion, then have them build and revise a complete opinion paragraph.

  2. Ask students to write: “Which class read-aloud deserves a sequel?” and support their choice with two details from the book.

  3. Play Linking Word Swap by giving teams paragraphs with repeated “because” and awarding points for clear, varied replacements.

  4. Have students write a letter to the principal proposing one playground improvement, supported by observations, student survey results, and a clear conclusion.
