What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose a topic and clearly tell what they think. They give at least two reasons for their view. They connect ideas with words such as and and because.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student names the topic, clearly states an opinion, and gives at least two relevant reasons. The student uses and or because to connect ideas.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse an opinion with a fact. They may repeat the opinion instead of giving reasons, or give reasons that do not fit. Some leave out the topic or linking words.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Which is better, reading alone or reading with a partner?” Write your opinion and two reasons, using and or because.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips labeled topic, opinion, and reasons, then have them build and read a complete opinion paragraph.

  2. Ask, “Should recess be longer?” Partners state a view and two reasons, then write their strongest response.

  3. Play Opinion Match: students match opinion cards to relevant reason cards and explain each match using because.

  4. Have students write the principal a note recommending one playground item, supported by two practical reasons.
