What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students name a topic, take a clear position, and support it with relevant reasons. They connect ideas with linking words and finish with a closing sentence.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student writes a focused paragraph with a clear opinion and at least two relevant reasons. The ideas connect with words such as because, and, or also, and the ending restates the position.

Common Misconceptions

Students may give a preference without explaining why. They may list unrelated reasons, omit linking words, or end abruptly without wrapping up the opinion.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Should recess be longer? Write an opening, your opinion, two reasons joined with linking words, and a closing sentence.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips to sort into topic, opinion, reasons, linking words, and conclusion, then assemble a complete paragraph.

  2. Ask, “Which classroom job is best?” Students state an opinion, give two reasons, and respond to a classmate’s reasoning.

  3. Play Opinion Builder by drawing topic, reason, and linking-word cards, then writing a paragraph that uses all three.

  4. Students write a note to the principal recommending one playground improvement, supported by two reasons and a clear conclusion.
