What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name a topic, take a clear position, and support it with relevant reasons. They connect ideas with linking words and finish with a closing sentence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student writes a focused paragraph with a clear opinion and at least two relevant reasons. The ideas connect with words such as because, and, or also, and the ending restates the position.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give a preference without explaining why. They may list unrelated reasons, omit linking words, or end abruptly without wrapping up the opinion.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Should recess be longer? Write an opening, your opinion, two reasons joined with linking words, and a closing sentence.”
