What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a topic and gather useful facts from two trustworthy sources. They combine the facts into a clear summary in their own words and show where the information came from.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student selects credible sources and records accurate, relevant facts from each one. The student combines those facts into a brief summary using original wording and identifies the sources used.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy sentences instead of paraphrasing. They may treat the first search result as trustworthy, repeat the same fact from both sources, or include unrelated details.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short sources on one topic. Ask them to write a three-sentence summary using accurate details from both, then label each detail’s source.

Ways to Teach It
Place two printed articles at stations, then have students sort fact cards into relevant, irrelevant, and repeated information.
Ask students to explain in writing which source seems more credible and name two details that support their judgment.
Play Source Match by having teams pair paraphrased facts with the article where each fact appears.
