What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students investigate a focused question using at least two trustworthy sources. They select relevant, accurate evidence and combine it into clear notes or an explanation in their own words.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student selects trustworthy sources and pulls facts that directly answer the research question. The student combines evidence from multiple sources, paraphrases accurately, and identifies where each fact came from.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose the first sources they find or assume every website is trustworthy. They may copy sentences, include unrelated facts, or summarize each source separately without connecting the information.

How to Assess It

Give students two short source cards about one topic. Ask them to write a three-sentence answer using one relevant fact from each source and explain why both sources are trustworthy.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs evidence cards from three sources, then have them sort facts by relevance and arrange selected cards into one supported answer.

  2. Ask students to write: Which source is most trustworthy, and what specific details helped you decide?

  3. Play Source Match, where teams pair research questions with relevant evidence from two credible source cards and reject distractors.

  4. Research a proposed change to the school lunch menu, then combine evidence from nutrition labels and student survey results into a recommendation.
