What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify who created a text and whose voice is speaking within it. They compare viewpoints and use text clues to explain the differences. They also consider how time, place, purpose, and audience shaped the text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can distinguish the author from a narrator or character who speaks. They can compare two viewpoints and cite details that reveal each one. They can explain how time, place, role, purpose, or audience affected what was said.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often assume the author and narrator are the same person. They may think different perspectives mean one account is wrong. They may also make claims about context without citing clues from the text.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short accounts of the same event, one by a participant and one by an observer. Ask them to explain one difference in perspective and cite a phrase as evidence.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups author biography, excerpt, and speaker cards; students match each set and underline clues that support their choices.
After reading two accounts, ask, "How does each person’s role change what details they include?" and require one quoted clue.
Play Perspective Detective: teams identify the speaker from clue cards and earn a point only when they explain their evidence.
Compare a school event announcement with a student’s report, then list how each writer’s purpose and audience shaped the wording.
