What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify who created a text and who is speaking within it. They connect each perspective to the time, place, audience, experiences, or events surrounding the text.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students distinguish the author from the narrator or speaker and cite details that reveal perspective. They explain how time, place, audience, purpose, or experience may shape differences between texts.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume the author and a first-person narrator or speaker are always the same person. They may label perspective as opinion alone or use background facts without linking them to evidence in the text.

How to Assess It

Give students two short accounts of the same event. Ask, “Who speaks in each account, what perspective does each show, and which context detail explains a difference?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Students match excerpt cards with author, speaker, audience, and context cards, then defend each match using a highlighted clue.

  2. Ask students to write: “How would this account change if another person involved told it?”

  3. Teams play Context Detective, earning points by identifying a speaker, perspective, audience, and supporting clue in short passages.

  4. Compare a principal’s email and a student’s mock social media post about one school event, noting audience, purpose, and perspective.
