What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify who created a text, who speaks within it, and whose viewpoint is presented. They connect those choices to the time, place, audience, and events surrounding the text’s creation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can distinguish the author from a narrator, speaker, or character and support that distinction with evidence. The student can explain how viewpoint and context shape details, tone, or message.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume the author and narrator are always the same person. They may confuse perspective with factual accuracy or make claims about context without citing text evidence.
How to Assess It
- Give students a first-person passage and a short author note. Ask: Who wrote it, who speaks, and which detail reflects the creator’s circumstances?

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs passage cards and context cards, then have them match each text to its likely time, place, audience, or event.
Read two accounts of one event, then ask: How does each speaker’s position affect the details included?
Play Author, Speaker, or Context by reading clues aloud and having students hold up the matching label.
Compare two local news reports about the same event and identify how audience, location, or timing may shape each report.
