What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use dates, author details, source notes, and clues in the writing to figure out what surrounded its creation. With guidance, they identify the time, writer, audience, or situation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name when, where, why, or by whom a piece was created. They point to details in the text or a source note that support each answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the setting inside a story with the conditions surrounding its creation. They may guess from one detail or assume the author shares the narrator's identity and experiences.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short wartime letter with a date and author note. Ask them to name two facts about its background and underline supporting clues.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a dated postcard, photograph, and author card, then have them assemble the clues and describe the postcard's background.
Read a short diary entry and ask, "What was happening when this person wrote, and which words helped you decide?"
Play Context Clue Match by pairing short passages with cards naming a time period, writer, audience, or situation.
Examine a school closure notice and discuss how the date, writer, audience, and event explain why it was created.
