What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students work with classmates to complete a group task. They share ideas, listen, take a role, make decisions, and help the group finish.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student contributes relevant ideas, listens, responds respectfully, and completes an agreed role. The student can explain the group's goal, decisions, and final product.
Common Misconceptions
- Some students think group work means dividing the task and never checking back. Others dominate, agree without listening, or wait for classmates to do the work.
How to Assess It
- Give groups four straws and tape to build a standing structure in eight minutes. Ask each student what they contributed and whose idea helped the group.

Ways to Teach It
Give teams paper, tape, and scissors to build the tallest tower, with assigned roles for planning, building, testing, and reporting.
Ask students to discuss or write: What should a teammate say when they disagree with the group's plan?
Play a group sequencing game where students arrange mixed story events, but each person must explain one placement before the team decides.
Have teams plan a class read-aloud day, including book choices, jobs, a schedule, and supplies.
