What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students work with classmates to agree on behavior, choose a shared goal, assign roles, and plan the steps. They help the group stay focused and solve problems together.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students contribute ideas, listen, reach agreement, and create a clear plan. They complete their roles, redirect peers respectfully, check progress, and adjust the plan when needed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think fair teamwork means everyone does the same job. They may choose vague goals, treat norms as teacher rules, or confuse leading with controlling others.
How to Assess It
- Give each group a planning card for a two-minute book talk. In five minutes, they must record one goal, three norms, assigned roles, and ordered steps.

Ways to Teach It
Give teams six index cards to build a project plan: one goal, two norms, three ordered steps, then assign each step.
Ask, "What should a teammate say when the group gets off task?" Students write one respectful phrase and discuss which works best.
Run a planning relay where teams order task cards, choose roles, and earn a point for explaining how each choice supports the goal.
Have students plan a classroom supply drive, setting a target, jobs, deadlines, and a check-in routine before creating announcements.
