What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students help their group choose simple rules, name a shared goal, and decide who will do each step. They listen, take turns, and help the group stay on task until the project is finished.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain the group’s goal and one agreed rule before starting. The student follows the plan, completes a job, and suggests a helpful next step when the group gets stuck.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think working together means everyone does the same job. Some let one person make every choice, interrupt others, or focus only on their own part.
How to Assess It
- Give groups three picture cards to sort into a story. Ask them to state a goal, choose one rule, plan turns, and complete the sort.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups blocks and a picture target, then have them choose two rules, assign jobs, and build together in ten minutes.
After a group drawing, ask, “What helped everyone work, and what should we change next time?”
Play Team Puzzle Relay: groups choose turn order, name a goal, assemble six pieces, and pause once to check progress.
Plan a class cleanup by choosing jobs, agreeing on safe steps, and checking whether every area is ready.
