What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students agree on clear expectations for working together. They set a shared goal, choose roles and steps, and keep the group moving toward completion.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students create specific norms, a clear goal, useful roles, and a workable timeline before beginning a shared project. They track progress, address problems respectfully, and revise the plan when needed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat norms as vague rules such as “be respectful” instead of naming observable actions. They may confuse assigning roles with setting goals, or assume one student should manage all deadlines and decisions.
How to Assess It
- Give groups a sample project and five minutes to submit one goal, three specific norms, assigned roles, and a procedure for missed deadlines.

Ways to Teach It
Give teams index cards listing project tasks, then have them arrange the cards into a timeline and assign each task to a role.
Ask students to write which group norm prevents missed work, explain why, and compare answers with a partner.
Run a role-card challenge where teams plan a class event while the facilitator keeps everyone focused and records decisions.
Have teams study a workplace meeting agenda, then create a similar agenda for an upcoming class project.
