What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students add relevant ideas during group conversations and projects. They listen without interrupting, connect comments to classmates’ thinking, and give kind, useful suggestions.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student takes turns, stays on topic, and refers to what classmates have said. The student offers specific feedback and helps the group make decisions or complete a shared product.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think listening means quietly waiting for their own turn. They may give vague feedback such as “good job,” interrupt others, or reject an idea without explaining why.

How to Assess It

Give groups of three five minutes to plan a new classroom reading corner. Use a checklist to record whether each student shares an idea, summarizes another idea, and gives one useful suggestion.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give teams paper, tape, and straws to build a tower, with each student required to suggest and respond to one design idea.

  2. Ask, “Which class rule helps learning most?” and have students build on or respectfully challenge a classmate’s answer.

  3. Play Feedback Match by pairing sample project work with specific suggestion cards, then discuss which feedback would help most.

  4. Have groups plan a class celebration by proposing activities, comparing ideas, giving feedback, and agreeing on a simple schedule.
