What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students share relevant ideas, listen without interrupting, and build on classmates’ comments during group work. They give specific, respectful feedback that helps the group improve its work.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student shares relevant ideas and explains why they may help the group. The student can paraphrase a peer’s point, ask a useful question, and suggest a specific improvement.

Common Misconceptions

Some students think participating means talking often, while others believe quiet agreement counts as a contribution. Feedback may be vague, personal, or unrelated to the group’s goal.

How to Assess It

Give trios five minutes to choose the best solution to a school problem. Use a checklist to record whether each student shares, paraphrases, and gives specific feedback.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups paper and tape to build a tower, requiring each student to paraphrase a teammate before adding a piece.

  2. Discuss a character’s hardest choice, using the stems “I heard you say” and “I would add” before responding.

  3. Sort feedback cards into helpful and unhelpful piles, then rewrite vague comments such as “Make it better” with specific advice.

  4. Plan a class celebration in teams, with each student proposing one idea and responding to a peer’s suggestion.
