What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students work with classmates to complete a task or make a group product. They share useful ideas, listen without interrupting, and respond with clear, respectful suggestions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students add relevant ideas without taking over the group. They can restate a classmate’s idea and give kind, specific feedback that helps the group improve its work.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think participating means talking often or repeating another person’s idea. They may give vague praise, interrupt, or reject an idea without explaining why.
How to Assess It
- Give groups five minutes to plan a class celebration. Use a checklist to record whether each student shares one idea, responds to a peer, and gives specific feedback.

Ways to Teach It
Give teams paper cups and index cards to build a tower, with each student proposing one idea before construction begins.
Ask, “Which playground rule should our class add?” Students share a choice, respond to one peer, and explain their reasoning.
Play Pass the Plan, where each student adds one detail to a group story and comments on the previous detail.
Have groups design a lunch menu, then present it to classmates acting as cafeteria staff who offer specific suggestions.
