What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students add relevant points to a group conversation and show they understood classmates before responding. They give specific, respectful suggestions that help the group improve its work.
What Mastery Looks Like
- During group work, a student speaks at useful times, refers to a classmate's point, and asks questions when something is unclear. The student gives respectful feedback that names a strength or suggests a clear improvement.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think participating means talking often or repeating someone else's idea. Feedback may be too vague, too personal, or given without first understanding the group's goal.
How to Assess It
- Give groups five minutes to choose the best title for a short passage. Ask each student to share one idea, connect to a classmate's comment, and offer one helpful suggestion.

Ways to Teach It
Give teams craft sticks and tape to build a bridge, with each student adding one idea and one specific suggestion.
After reading a short story, ask, "Which character made the best choice?" Students respond, then summarize a classmate's reasoning in writing.
Play Discussion Token Challenge, where students spend tokens by sharing an idea, asking a question, connecting ideas, or giving feedback.
Have groups plan a class celebration within a set budget, then present how each member's ideas shaped the final plan.
