Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students take an active role in group talk and shared work. They offer relevant points, show they understood classmates, and give useful suggestions that move the work forward.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student builds on a classmate’s comment, asks a useful follow-up question, and keeps the group focused. The student gives kind, specific feedback and uses peer suggestions when revising shared work.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think participation means talking often, even when comments repeat earlier points. They may confuse feedback with praise, criticism, or taking over a peer’s work.
How to Assess It: Give groups five minutes to plan a class event. Use a checklist to record whether each student adds one idea, paraphrases a peer, and gives one specific suggestion.

Lesson moves

Give groups straws and tape to build a tower, then require each student to propose, summarize, and respond before construction begins.
Ask students to write: Which group comment changed your thinking, and how did it affect the final decision?
Play Feedback Relay, where teams improve a paragraph by passing it around and adding one specific, actionable suggestion each round.
Have groups plan a school lunch menu, balancing cost and student preferences while recording whose ideas shaped each choice.
